Negative Space: book launch & discussion – 27. April /  by Paul McDevitt

At 19:30, Wednesday 27 April we will have a special event to mark the launch of Negative Space: Orbiting Inner and Outer Experience (SFU Galleries, 2015). Edited by Antonia Hirsch, this book considers the eponymous inner and outer space as both “real” and imaginary. While artistic practice used to be accepted as a legitimate expression of an individual’s interior world, there has been an increasing demand for art to be socially productive. Four of the publication’s contributors will be present to engage with a topic that could have constituted another chapter of the book: a discussion of how such a thing as "relevance" emerges in artistic practice. 

The conversation with Daniel Colucciello Barber, Olaf Nicolai, Ana Teixeira Pinto, and Wolfgang Winkler will be moderated by Antonia Hirsch; Patricia Reed, initiator of the Inclinations lecture series, will act as respondent.

April is going to be a busy month here at Farbvision. First off we have an amazing joint project by Kevin Schmidt and Jan St. Werner. Felder is the latest album in Jan’s Fiepblatter series on Thrill Jockey., which is being launched worldwide by a curated group of artists and performers, each offering a unique, individual interpretations of the album. Kevin’s DIY HiFi – a pair of monumental wooden full-range horn speakers – built by the artist, will be installed in the space. Farbvision will open for 64 minutes each day from April 2 through April 9 at 6pm to play the whole Felder album. Drinks and extended listening on Saturday, April 2. 

 

Opening Saturday April 16, from 7pm: Mini Bar, a show of new paintings by celebrated British artist Paul Housley. Paul’s show will have extended opening hours over gallery weekend (April 30 - May 1).

The Beacon Sound Choir, a project instigated by multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick. Recorded at Beacon Sound, a record shop and label in Portland, Oregon, Sunday Morning Drones is a work of improvised vocal drone in two parts.

Single sided 10” and pressed to gold vinyl with screen-printed B-side.  Handmade artwork by Paul McDevitt and Cornelius Quabeck. Numbered edition of 300.



Tommy Støckel's Studio Font /  by Paul McDevitt

We're hosting a book launch and exhibition of sculptural objects from Tommy Støckel's Studio Font. Published by Infinite Greyscale, Studio Font is a 192 page colour offset book written entirely in an image-based font created by Støckel. Each letter, and key punctuation marks, are  allocated an object – 36 in total. These objects were sourced from Støckel's studio and comprise of macquettes and unfinished sculptural sketches. The 36 objects are presented as chapters in the book, with each one accompanied by a text explaining its origin. – a text written using Støckel's Studio Font. 

Complex, mysterious, but not impenetrable. Studio Font is the ultimate artists book.

We're excited to be having our first live music evening at Farbvision. Legendary musician and artist Jan St. Werner will be in our space on Thursday 19 November for a special event that will be part lecture, part performance. This event will also celebrate the launch of his new album as Noisemashinetapes – Acid Deceit (Sonig, cassette).

We'll be opening our doors for the first time on the occasion of Erik Steinbrecher's Under the Sculpture, 6/11/15. 

This also marks the launch of the first Farbvision edition. Erik will produce a series of 60 signed, numbered posters. Available directly from us (and in the shop, once we figure out how to make that work) at a remarkably reasonable price.
